ll be the first to tell you that I love hunting deer. It is such a challenge, especially with traditional equipment. My family lives off of venison and I'm so blessed to have a wife who will not only eat it, but also help me butcher and cook it! My love for hunting deer started when I was young and it's a natural thing growing up in the middle of Kansas. I have had the opportunity to hunt Pronghorn a few times and I have points in some western states for Elk and Pronghorn in anticipation of future adventures. Really there isn't anything that I wouldn't hunt given the opportunity. However my day job as a teacher makes it hard for me to get away in the fall. Spring is no different. It's such a busy time for me with school wrapping up, coaching golf, attending my boys activities, etc. That's what makes turkey hunting so great. It comes at a perfect time of year. I haven't been able to hunt deer for 3 months, and as much as I love calling coyotes, it's not something that I do much of when it warms up. Yet my predatory instinct is still telling me to get out and hunt! Turkey tracks show where the birds have been but it's up to you to find them! To be honest, I have focused more on my boys success with turkeys over the past couple of years rather than that of my own. It's worked out great. My oldest son has taken a nice bird each of the last 3 years, and my youngest shot his first bird last spring. This is my plan again for this year. I may not have a chance to hunt turkeys on my own tag, but the satisfaction of seeing my boys success and passing on my passion to them is definitely worth it.
Whatever your plans are this spring I hope that you get out and enjoy God's creation and the gifts that he has given us. Spend time with family and friends and make memories. Set out to do the things that you've always wanted to do and work to find a way to do them. Oh and be sure to order that bow from Coyote Creek Archery that you've been thinking about for a while! Life is short, get out and make the most of it!
